Abstract

Fabrics, e.g. of cotton, and wood pulp are bleached by contacting them at 50 -70 C with an aqueous composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic peroxide e.g. urea peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or methylethylketone peroxide, or an inorganic persalt, e.g. an alkali metal perborate, percarbonate, manopersulphate or persulphate, and an N-acyl azole having the formula: in which X is nitrogen or C-R 1 , Y is nitrogen or CH and at least one of X and Y is nitrogen, R 1 is hydrogen, alkyl, halo or nitro, R 2 is a (C 1 -C 18 ) aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a halo-, nitro- or alkoxy-substituted (C 1 -C 18 ) aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a cycloaliphatic radical, an aryl radical or a hydroxy-, alkyl, nitro-, halo-, alkoxy-, carboxy- or carbonylimidazolesubstituted aryl radical and A is a mono-or di-substituted or unsubstituted 6- membered aromatic or N-heteroaromatic ring containing 1-4 nitrogen atoms, the substituents being nitro, carboxyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, halo, sulpho, cyano or alkyl, and when X is nitrogen, R 2 is not (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl or unsubstituted phenyl. The compound of the formula II may be a benzimide, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, triazine or tetrazine. The N-acyl azole and peroxy compound may be present in a mole ratio of about 1 to 1.
