Abstract

A polyester is made by the polycondensation of: (a) at least one aromatic or aliphatic di-, tri- or tetra-carboxylic acid or an ester forming derivative thereof, (b) A polyethylene glycol of average molecular weight 200 to 5000. (c) A partial #, v unsaturated ether of a polyol or a mixture of such ethers, corresponding to the general formula where R 2 is aliphatic, R 3 is H or alkyl, (p + q) is an integer from 3 to 8 and the average value of p is from 0.5 to 1.5. In the preparation (a) the molar amount of the polycarboxylic acid divided by the molar amount of the polyethylene glycol residues is between 0.5 and 5 and (b) the number of -OH groups divided by the number of -COOH groups is between 0À8 and 1À8. Specific polycarboxylio acid components are phthalic, ispphthalic, terephthalic, butane 1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid, trimesic and trimellitic acids. Such polyesters, having an acid number of 20 to 50 may be neutralized with a nitrogenous organic base or an inorganic base. The polyesters may be used as coating compositions with or without water and/or organic solvents (e.g. ethylene glycol ethers). The compositions may also contain driers (e.g. cobalt naphthenate), pigments (e.g. TiO 2 ) or fillers (e.g. calcium carbonate and talc).
