Abstract

Polymer compositions contain as a flame retardant additive compounds of the Formula I wherein X represents halogen, Y and Y1 represent halogen, alkyl C 1-4 , alkoxy C 1-4 or halogen substituted alkyl C 1-4 or alkoxy C 1-4 and R represents hydrogen, alkyl C 1-4 or halogen. Suitable polymers include natural rubber, linear and cross-linked polybutadiene, polyethylene, polypropylene, butyl rubber, ethylenepropylene rubber and terpolymer, poly(cyclopentadiene), polystyrene and high impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile - butadiene - styrene graft polymer, polyamide, poly(styrene-acrylonitrile), acrylic rubber and polycarbonate. The preferred compound I is 6-(11,41,51,61,71,71- hexachloro - 51 - norbornen - 21 - yl) - 1,2,3,4,9,9- hexachloro - 1 ,4,4a,5,6,7, 8,8a - octahydro - 1,4- methanonaphthalene. Antimony compounds may also be present.
