Abstract

An ointment for the treatment of burns comprises silver sulphadiazine and a carrier. The carrier may be an oil-in-water emulsion or a hydrophilic ointment base. Optional ingredients are (a) silver salicylate, (b) a silver salt of an antibiotic e.g. silver penicillin, silver cephalothin, silver colistimethate or silver tetracycline, (c) another silver sulphonamide such as silver sulphamerazine, silver sulphonanilide, silver sulphamylon, silver sulphathiazole or silver sulphapyridine, (d) an aqueous solution of chloride ions e.g. NaCl.
