Abstract

The hydrophobic character of alkene polymers (and copolymers) which may be applied as a coating on paper is lessened by mixing the polymer with from 0.05 to 2% by weight of a mono-ester or diester of a hexavalent, partly dehydrated alcohol and C 12 -C 22 aliphatic carboxylic acid, and from 0.01 to 0.5% by weight of an amide of a C 12 -C 22 aliphatic carboxylic acid. Polymers: polyethylene, polypropylene, poly (4-methylpentene-1), copolymers of ethylene and propylene with one another, or with butylene-1, pentylene-1, hexylene- 1 and octylene-1, and copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate. Esters: esters of partly dehydrated hexitols such as mannitan or sorbitan, with saturated or unsaturated fatty acids such as lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic or erucic acid. Amides: amides of saturated or unsaturated C 12 -C 22 fatty acids such as lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic or erucic acid amide. Conventional additves normally used with polyalkenes can be included also. An example demonstrates the effect on the hydrophobic character of low density polyethylene of 0.3% of sorbitan monolaurate and 0.05% oleic acid amide.
