Abstract

1352347 Polyolefin compositions and paperlike films thereof UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [30 Jan 1970] 20723/71 Heading C3P Polyolefin compositions comprise components A, B, C and D below optionally with one or more of components E, F and G. (A) A polyolefin, e.g. high density polyethylene and/or polypropylene; preferred proportion: 45-85 wt. per cent of the composition; (B) A U.V. stabilizer comprising at least one organic compound capable of forming a sixmembered chelate ring through hydrogen bonding, and which is a solid or liquid which does not decompose or volatilize below 200‹ C., e.g. of formula wherein the various A's and B's, which may be the same or different are H or substituents (e.g. OH, Cl, But, n-octoxy); a is 1-9; and b is 1-8; preferred proportion: 0À2-2À0 wt. per cent; (C) An antistatic agent comprising at least one alkoxylated amine or amide which contains at least one saturated or unsaturated C 7 -C 22 hydrocarbon group optionally bearing one or more substituents (e.g. OH), and which does not volatilize or decompose below 200‹ C., e.g. N,N - bis - (2 - hydroxyethyl)- or N,N- bis - 3 - hydroxypropyl) - C 8 -C 22 alkylamines or -C 8 -C 22 fatty acid amides; and N-(3- dodecyloxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl) - ethanolamine; preferred proportion: 0À1-2À0 wt. per cent; (D) A thermal stabilizer comprising at least one sterically hindered phenol which does not volatilize or decompose below 200‹ C., e.g. octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate or tetrakis-[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyphenyl) propionyloxymethyl] methane; preferred proportion: 0À02-1À0 wt. per cent; (E) A filler preferably having an average particle diameter of 0À1-15 microns, e.g. CaO, ZnO, MgCO 3 , CaSO 4 , MgSO 4 , PbSO 4 , TiO 2 , MgO, CaCO 3 , various silicas, silicates, silica-alumina or asbestos; preferred proportion: 5-45 wt. per cent; (F) A polymeric accommodation resin, e.g. a low density vinyl addition polymer or copolymer e.g. polyethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (many others are listed); preferred proportion 3-15 wt. per cent; (G) Unspecified flame retardants and colorants. The compositions may be formed into sheets or into paper-like films of 0À25-20 mils thickness which may be surface-treated by electrostatic discharge, flame treatment or oxidative chemical treatment.
