Abstract
Solvent is removed from a hot mixture of polymerizate and solvent by injecting the mixture under pressure through an opening 5 between the ends of casing 2 wherein decompression and substantial vaporization of solvent occurs and foam is formed the foam is broken by rotating intercalating screws 1, the solvent vapour flows through jacketed cooled zone 17 and condensate is withdrawn at outlet 3, while the polymerizate is conveyed with recompression in the opposite direction and is reheated by heating jacket 4. The screws are provided, downstream of opening 5, with flights 6 which have a vapour conveying action contrary to the direction of the feed. Kneading elements 7 assist in raising the polymerization mass to the required temperature. The polymerizate, which leaves the left-hand end of the casing, still contains solvent and it is passed through throttle 8 into a second stage connected by openings 13, 131, 1311 to a vacuum pump. Solvent condensate is withdrawn at outlet 14 and desolventized polymerizate leaves the apparatus through exit 15.
