Abstract

In a braking arrangement for free rolling rail vehicles a rail brake 2 is switched on or off if a vehicle speed is above or below a set value as determined by a device 3 in advance of the brake and, when switched on, is released when the vehicle speed drops to the required release speed. Two spaced wheel detectors in unit 3 determine a time period which is a function of vehicle speed and this is compared with a fixed time setting stored in unit 5. When the measured time is less than the fixed time setting a signal is applied to the brake control unit 6 to apply the brake. When the vehicle enters the brake a succession of wheel monitors 7 spaced apart by the minimum axle spacing ensure that the monitoring control 8 is influenced only by a passing wheel and also switch on a timing element 9 set to a time which is a function of the required leaving speed. Between the monitors 7 wheel-operated time pulse generators 10 are disposed and when the time between two generated pulses exceeds the time set in the element 9 a signal is supplied to release the brake. Unit 11 acts to switch off the brake when vehicles pass in the opposite direction. In a second arrangement, Figs. 2A, 2B, 2C (not shown), two rail brakes are provided and the speed determining means in approach to the brake includes two time setting devices whereby if the vehicle speed exceeds a first high value then the first brake is switched on and this switches on the second brake if the vehicle's speed has not been reduced to the required leaving speed before leaving the first brake, if the speed exceeds a second lower value then only the second brake is switched on and if the speed is below the second lower value then both brakes are switched off.
