Abstract

A tyre 9 is tested and corrected for non- uniformity by determining the amounts and locations of irregularities and controlling the amount and location of the rubber removed from the tyre so as to diminish or annul the irregularities. As shown, an inflated tyre 9 is rotated against a test drum 7 with a predetermined radial load applied by hydraulic pressure. During rotation of the tyre, the radial force variations are measured by the test drum and recorded on an oscillogram 5 of a read-out device, the curve of the oscillogram being reproduced on cardboard 25 which is wrapped around a cylinder 19 rotatable at the same speed as the tyre. A sensing arm 27 follows the curve and a transducer 29 feeds the signal into a control mechanism for a pair of grinding wheels 31 made of steel and coated with tungsten carbide. The set-up of the cardboard on the drum is such as to allow for the time delay between when a portion of the tyre transmits an impulse to the test drum and when the same portion reaches the grinding wheels. Each grinding wheel is adjustably-mounted on a carrier plate (47), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and is moved vertically into and out of engagement with the tyre by an hydraulic cylinder (53), the travel being controlled by the transducer 29 and checked by a transducer (81) in contact with the carrier plate. A further transducer (87) measures the eccentricity or radial run-out of the tyre and delivers a signal to a central mechanism of an hydraulic cylinder (65) for maintaining a fixed distance between the tyre and a mounting plate (54) for the grinding wheel carrier plate. The irregularities may be ground off by repeating the process until the tyres are reduced to an acceptable level, a separate piece of cardboard being prepared for the cylinder 19 at each stage alternatively, the irregularities may be ground off on a continuous basis, the cardboard being replaced by a cylinder carrying a flexible strip (93), Fig. 4 (not shown), which is moved as the cylinder rotates by a servo mechanism (95) in accordance with the pattern of the radial force variations, a transducer (97) being provided to follow the curve of the flexible strip and send a signal to the control for the grinding wheels. A comparitor may be used to automatically terminate the process when the radial force variations are within an acceptable range or are too large to be easily corrected. If desired, the driving motor for the tyre, and optionally a brake, may be controlled so as to temporarily halt rotation when grinding is to take place. Grinding wheels of different coarseness may be employed to provide a polished finish and each grinding wheel may be separately controlled if so desired. Instead of using an oscillograph, the measurements from the test drum may be recorded by a memory device such as a tape recorder.
