Abstract
Apparatus for the determination of particles present in the atmosphere in dispersed form e.g. radio-active particles comprises a box 1' containing a turbine 2' for drawing in a sample of the atmosphere through apertures 16, a filter 4' for retaining the particles and a sonic neck 5', the sample leaving by way of apertures 10', a motor 3' driving the turbine 2' at a speed corresponding continuously to the speed of sonic flow of the sampled atmosphere through the neck 5'. In this way a constant flow-rate is maintained. The radio-active particles collected in the filter 4' may be monitored by a detector 18 in a cap 17 sensitive to radiation emitted from the particles and connected to a pulse counting unit 19 and an alarm signal 20 which lights when the radiation intensity exceeds a given value. An indicator 23 may be provided to show the time during which the apparatus has been operating and the box 1' also contains batteries or accumulators at 11' for driving the motor 3'. In a simplified embodiment, the cap 17 and indicator 23 are omitted. If desired the filter 4' can be replaced by a cartridge of activated carbon for absorption of iodine or for use in detecting chemical vapours if the filter is replaced by paper impregnated with a suitable reagent.
