Abstract

A nuclear fuel assembly comprises, within a coolant circulation duct, a bundle of fuel pins each comprising a can of which one portion is loaded with fissile material and another portion constitutes an expansion chamber, those portions of the cans loaded with fissile material being at the same level within the duct, and the fuel pins being arranged in two sections in which the expansion chambers are disposed at different levels in the duct. The assembly for use in a fast reactor, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a central bundle of pins loaded with fissile material disposed within a duct 16 of hexagonal cross-section between a top bundle 12 and a bottom bundle 14 of pins loaded with fertile material. The fuel and the expansion chamber portions of the pins of the central bundle are separated by racks 42 in the pin cladding. A first section 10a of the central bundle occupies the centre of the bundle and has a cross-sectional area corresponding to that of a central passageway left free by the top and bottom bundles 12, 14. This section is composed of pins whose expansion chambers are located above the fuel portions. In order to permit of free expansion, the pins of the section 10a are simply guided by the pins of the second section 10b and by the pins of the top bundle 12, being suspended from a lifting head 22 at their upper ends whilst their lower ends are left free. The second section 10b is made up of the remainder of the pins of the central bundle and the expansion chambers of this section are placed beneath the fuel portions. These pins are suspended from a grid 32 and guided at their lower ends by a grid 36. The coolant is admitted in the direction of the arrows f through an inlet 20 in a bottom end-fitting 18 and the greater part passes upwardly along an axial portion delimited by the pins of the bottom bundle 14 and the expansion chambers of the bundle section 10b, thus by-passing the bottom bundle and the expansion chambers from which only a relatively small amount of heat is released. The flow is then distributed between the necked portions of the section 10b and cools in a uniform manner the fuel portions of both sections 10a, 10b. At the level of the grid 32, the greater part of the flow escapes laterally into the top bundle 12 which, by reason of the larger diameter of the top bundle pins, affords a lower pressure drop coefficient than the section 10a of the central bundle.
