Abstract

A method of producing heat and cold insulating material consisting of or comprising a layer of foamed plastics includes the steps of mixing together at least two basic components which react with one another with one or more activators to form foam, directing the mixture towards the gap 26 between two moving supporting webs 14, 16 and moving the mixture and the webs between web guides in the form of a pair of rolls 10, 12 or bars, and then between gauging plates 50, 52, the distance between the plates determining the thickness of the layer of foam between the webs and this distance being adjustable by moving the plates towards or away from one another, the distance between the rolls or bars also being adjustable. In the device shown for carrying out the method the reaction mixture is deposited as a jet or spray from a nozzle 28 on to the web 14 as the latter passes from a roller 13 to rolls 10, 12. The mixture forms a bulge 15 ahead of the rolls and is reciprocated horizontally to spread the mixture evenly. Alternatively the transverse speed of the nozzle or the flow of mixture may be varied to ensure even spreading. More than one nozzle may be used. The assembly 48 of foaming mixture and webs 14, 16 then passes between roll 10 and adjustable roll 12 and then between plates 50, 52 which may be heated and/or cooled plates. The webs may be advanced by belts 21, 23. The width of the foam is controlled by edge guide rails or air jets blowing on the foam. One or both of the webs 14, 16 may have an adhesive repellent silicone based coating to enable it or them to be stripped from the set foam. In this case the coated web(s) may be endless. The webs may be of paper, cardboard, plastics material, textiles, metal foil, or veneer. The foam may be produced by the reaction of polyisocyanates with polyether or polyester compounds with tertiary amines, or mixtures of organic tin compounds and water, as activators. An intermediate layer of metal, plastics, organic or inorganic fabric or threads may be inserted in the foam. In a second embodiment the roller 13 and belts 21, 23 are omitted. The materials produced are shock absorbent and may be used in packaging e.g. as boxes, containers, pouches, or in chests.
