Abstract

A regenerative capacitor comprises dielectric layers 5 and electrodes consisting of pairs of electrically interconnected metallized areas 2, 2 and 21, 21, each pair being separated by layers 1, 11 of insulating material in the field-free space of the capacitor, the sum of the surface conductances of a pair of metallized areas being not more than 1.4 mhos, and the surface conductance of any one metallized area being not more than o.8 mhos. The metallized areas may be aluminium, zinc, or cadmium. The dielectric may be polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyphenylene oxide, polycarbonate, P.T.F.E. or P.T.F.E.-propylene. The insulating interlayer material may be paper or acetyl cellulose, i.e. materials containing in their molecules at least 10% of the oxygen required to convert them to stable oxidation products, and also to oxidize the carbon formed when the dielectric breaks down. The capacitor according to the invention is stated to show regenerative properties even when successive breakdowns occur, as at 6 and 61 following the first breakdown at 4.
