Abstract

A method of assembling an implosion inhibiting clamping band 7 around the glass bulb of a TV display tube so that the faceplate of the bulb between the front surface and the mould-match line 4 remains uncovered comprises arranging the clamping band over an intermediate band 6 around the bulb adjacent the mould match line and securing the intermediate band to the bulb and to the clamping band. A steel strip 6 is wrapped around a substantially rectangular face-plate 1 and secured by polyvinyl acetate with polyester, polyurethane or epoxy resin adhesive which may extend to the mould match line. The strip 6 extends over the seal 3 between the faceplate and the cone 2 and carries fastening lugs 11. The space between the band and cone is filled with synthetic resin 12. Two Cr-Ni steel bands 7, 71 are tensioned around band 6 and a lubricant is provided to reduce friction, thereby achieving uniform tension. Alternatively a clamping band with several joints may be used or a steel strip, welded at one end to band 6, is wound round under tension and its other end welded to the first end. Preferably, band 6 is uninterrupted and positioned on the tube when hot. Spacing blocks may be inserted between bands 6 and 7 or between band 6 and the face-plate to increase pressure on the straight faces of the face-plate.
