Abstract

A pneumatically activated fastening element drive apparatus, comprising: a housing box provided with means defining first and second cylindrical chambers, aligned axially, said first chamber being larger than said second chamber and being in communication with one of its ends with one end of said second chamber; a piston assembly having first and second piston heads spaced axially and mounted within said first and second cylindrical chambers, respectively, with reciprocating axial movement; an annular first and second sealing means mounted on said first and second piston heads and applied in sliding sealing contact with said first and second cylindrical chambers, respectively; valve means for controlling the communication of a supply source of pressurized air with the opposite end of said first chamber, for effecting the movement of said plunger assembly from a position of receiving fasteners, wherein said first the plunger head is disposed next to the opposite end of said first chamber, to a position of driven or nailed fastening element in which said first plunger head is disposed adjacent the first of the ends mentioned in said first chamber, and to isolate the opposite end of said first chamber with respect to the pressurized air supply source and allowing the pressurized air brought into communication therewith to discharge to the atmosphere during the movement of said plunger assembly from said position of fixed fastening element or driven to said receiving position of fasteners; drive means of fastening elements, connected to said plunger assembly for moving with it and driving or nailing a fastening element in response to the movement of said plunger assembly from said fastening element receiving position to said fastener element position.
