Abstract

Printing plates are produced by charging e.g. by corona discharge, and imagewise exposing e.g. contact, dia or episcopic exposure, a photo-conductive layer comprising a polymerizable organic photo-conductor containing an olefinic double bond or capable of forming such bonds during heating, developing the charge image with a finely divided substance which forms free radials on heat, heating to 50 -300 C. and removing the non-image areas with a solvent. Specified photo-conductors are N-(dimethyl vinyl) carbazole, N-vinyl carbazole, 2-vinyl-4-(o-chlorophenyl)-5-(p-diethyl aminophenyl)-oxazole, 1-hydroxyethyl-2, 5-bis- (p-diethylamino-phenyl)-1, 3, 4-triazole, N-vinyl triazoles, vinyl dibenzofurans, acenaphthylene, stilbene and styrene derivatives. The photoconductors may be dispersed in an alkali-soluble resin e.g. copolymers of styrene and maleic anhydride, polystyrene or phenolic resins and the layer may contain sensitizers. Supports for the photo-conductive layer are Al, Zn, Mg and Cu plates and cellulose products. Specified developers are benzoyl peroxide, a dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, succinyl peroxide, azoisobutyronitrile, tetraphenyl hydrazine, dehydrolophine, diazidostilbene and sodium trichloroacetate. The developer may be applied in solid form with or without carrier e.g. iron chips or a resin-containing toner or dispersed in a liquid together with a dyestuff. Hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons are used as such liquids which may contain additives such as naphthenates or linseed oil. Application of the developer is by magnetic brush or drum or immersion or roller application for liquids. The unpolymerized areas are removed by aqueous alkali e.g. aqeous solutions of sodium metasilicate containing glycol, methanol and glycerol.
