Abstract

A heat exchanger for use as a nuclear reactor steam generator or superheater comprises flatcoiled tubes 2 for water or steam connected at their ends to inlet and outlet collectors 25, 26 and enclosed in a rectangular sheath 4 within a cylindrical container 1, a cover 12 being removably welded and bolted to the container 1 and supporting collectors 25, 26 by frame 28 and tubes 2 by tie rods 16, so that the tube assembly can be removed for servicing by removing the cover. Sheath 4 is supported in container 1 by co-operating flanges 6 and 7 which also effect a seal, so that liquid sodium entering laterally disposed inlets 10 is caused to flow over the top of sheath 4 and past tubes 2 before leaving container 1 through outlet 11. A rupturable disc 14 is provided in case of successive pressure in the container. Brackets 8 support the container on a structure receiving a number of the heat exchangers forming the steam generator. Metal sheaths 22 prevent parasitic heat exchange.
