Abstract
In a continuous casting machine apparatus is provided for aligning a starter bar 5 with the mould 1 and/or for disengaging the starter bar from the cast ingot 6 and/or for aligning the cast ingot with the mould, and includes control means operable by apertures 15, 16 in the starter bar, the apertures permitting signals from a radiating source 13 to enter a receiver 14 which are subsequently transmitted to respective control units 17, 18 and 19 to effect one or more of the aligning operations or the releasing operation. The aperture 16 is used when the starter bar is introduced into the machine prior to the start of a casting operation, signals passing through the aperture 16 being passed to the control unit 18 to effect actuation of the aligning device 7. The aperture 15 permits the actuation of the piston and cylinder unit 9 which disengages the starter bar from the cast ingot by the displacement of the roller 12. The aligning device 8 is similarly controlled to effect the alignment of the ingot with the mould.
