Abstract

A shock absorber for insertion into a drill string comprises a tubular member A adapted to be connected to one part of the string, a piston member B reciprocable in the member A and adapted to be connected to the other part of the string, a liquid pressure transmitting chamber E between the members, a gas cavity C in one of the members, and a movable separation element F in the cavity preventing liquid (a lubricant) from the chamber intermingling with the gas in the cavity. The cavity is shown as formed in the member A and the element is a flexible bag to which gas is supplied at the surface through a valve D. The other member (shown as the member B) has a cavity G housing a flexible bag F' to which drilling fluid in the bore-hole is freely admitted. As the string and absorber are lowered into the borehole the increasing pressure of the drilling fluid causes liquid from the part of the cavity G outside the bag F' to pass through a non-return valve 203 into the chamber E and compress the gas in the bag F, the arrangement preventing the absorber shortening under the increasing pressure of drilling fluid. When the bit engages the bottom of the borehole the piston member moves uwardly until the gas is compressed sufficiently to withstand the load applied to the bit. As the string and absorber are removed from the borehole the absorber lengthens and liquid in the chamber'E by-passes the piston seal 131 so that the gas pressure is reduced. The members have a splined connection 233 which transmit torque from the member A to the member B and the bit. In a modification the chamber G and bag F' are dispensed with, the drilling fluid entering the chamber E through a non return valve which may be opened by thrusting a tool down the bore of the string as it and the absorber are removed from a borehole. Alternatively the drilling fluid enters the chamber E through an aperture which is closed by the piston when the weight is taken by the bit.
