Abstract

In a vehicle detector having an electrical loop 5 with at least one conductor portion lying across a roadway, traffic lane or the like obliquely to the traffic direction of the roadway, means 3 is provided for feeding the loop with alternating current and for detecting changes in its inductance responsive to electrically conductive traffic crossing the oblique portion so that the number of vehicles in this traffic may be counted. A series of loops may be located in two roadways as shown in Fig. 3 or alternatively the two roadways may be covered by a single loop. The loop may be partly at an angle and partly perpendicular to the direction, of the roadway (Fig. 4, not shown) so that bicycles are detected by the angled part of the loop and automobile traffic by the perpendicular part. The detector loop is connected to an electrical device 3 which includes a high-frequency oscillator, devices for registering changes in the inductance of the loop and a counter.
