Abstract
Acrylonitrile is hydrodimerized into adiponitrile by electrolysis of a medium comprising: (a) acrylonitrile, e.g. 1-70% (b) amide, sulphone or sulphoxide solvent, e.g. 30-80% of (dimethyl) formamide or acetamide, dimethyl or tetramethylene sulphone, sulpholane, dimethyl or diethyl sulphoxide (c) ammonium or alkali metal thio-cyanate, perchlorate or nitrate electrolyte, e.g. 0.1-50% of NaClO4 or KSCN and (d) water, e.g. less than 10%. The medium may be a solution, an emulsion or a suspension, having a pH between 3 and 12. The electrolytic cell may be with or without a diaphragm constituted by a porous plate or permselective membrane where the catholyte is the medium and the anolyte is e.g. aqueous HClO4. The cathode may be of Hg, Pb, Sn, Ni, but preferably is a graphite cylinder or disc the anode may be of magnetite, graphite, Ni, Pb, PbO2, but preferably is a Pt trellis concentric cylinder or disc. The medium may be circulated by stirring.
