Abstract

For waterproofing nylon fabrics there are used successively a composition A of a thermosetting acrylic resin which produces a flexible film and a pigment, and a composition B of a thermosetting acrylic resin which forms a stiff film and a silicone. The composition A may be an aqueous dispersion or a solution in organic solvents of a copolymer produced from at least one acrylic and/or methacrylic ester of a monohydric alcohol and 10-2% of at least one acrylic cross-linking agent. Examples of acrylic cross-linking agents are methylolated acrylamide and methacrylamide, methylolated melamine acrylate and methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate. Emulsifiers and stabilizers may be present. The pigment may be black iron oxide, titanium dioxide, phthalocyanine blue. The composition B contains copolymers consisting either of 70-90% of at least one acrylic and/or methacrylic ester of a monohydric alcohol having at least 2 carbon atoms and 10 to 30% of acrylic cross-linking agents or 70-90% of methyl acrylate and/or methyl methacrylate and 30-2% of at least one acrylic cross-linking agent, or 70-98% of a mixture of methyl acrylate and/or methyl methacrylate and at least one acrylic and/or methacrylic ester of a monohydric alcohol having at least 2 carbon atoms and 30-2% of at least one acrylic cross-linking agent. In the form of an aqueous emulsion, composition B may contain a polysiloxane, and as a solution in organic solvents may contain a methyl or methyl phenyl polysiloxane. In Example (1) composition B comprises: 95% of a copolymer of 85% ethyl acrylate 5% methylolated melamine acrylate in a solvent mixture composed of ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, 2% methyl-phenyl silicone (R/Si = 1.5) solution in toluene and catalysed with butyl polytitanate, colloidal silica and composition A comprises 58% of a copolymer containing 95% of butyl acrylate and 5% methylolated melamine acrylate, in a solvent mixture as in B, black iron oxide in propanol in (2) composition A comprises 79% of a copolymer of 90% ethyl acrylate, 7.5% methylolated acrylamide, 2.5% glycol dimethacrylate in aqueous emulsion, ammonium nitrate hexahydrate as cross-linking catalyst, ammonium polyacrylate as thickener, titanium dioxide and composition B comprises 95% of a 70% ethyl acrylate, 15% methyl methacrylate, 15% methylolated melamine acrylate in a solvent mixture as in (1), colloidal silica, 2% of a silicone as in (1) in (3) composition A comprises 82% of a copolymer of 80% butyl acrylate, 7.5% methylolated acrylamide, 10% ethyl acrylate, 2.5% glycidyl methacrylate in aqueous emulsion, ammonium nitrate hexahydrate, ammonium polyacrylate, ground chalk, phthalocyanine blue and composition B comprises 85% of a copolymer of 68% ethyl acrylate, 22% methyl methacrylate, 7.5% methylolated acrylamide, 2.5% glycidyl methacrylate in aqueous emulsion, colloidal silica, a methyl-hydrogen silicone resin in aqueous emulsion catalysed by dibutyl tin diacetate, ammonium polyacrylate.ALSO:A process for waterproofing nylon fabrics used for covers comprises applying to both surfaces of the cover, first, at least one layer of a composition A of thermosetting acrylic resins which produce a flexible film and containing a pigment, then at least one layer of a composition B of thermosetting acrylic resins which form a stiff film and containing a silicone. The term "cover" includes covers for protecting goods transported in railway wagons, lorries for boats, convertible models of motor cars, swimming pools, pneumatic boats, sacks, valises, industrial and sports wear, and fabrics generally. The nylon fabric is a conventional fabric of nylon threads, preferably of 210 to 1200 deniers. The composition A may be an aqueous dispersion or a solution in organic solvents of a copolymer produced from at least one acrylic and/or methacrylic ester of a monohydric alcohol and 10-2% of at least one acrylic cross-linking agent. Example af acrylic cross-linking agents are methylolated acrylamide and methacrylamide, methylolated melamine acrylate and methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate. Emulsifiers and stabilisers may be present. The compositions may be applied by doctor-blade, each being dried at say 130 to 180 DEG C before application of the next layer. Nylon fabrics of specified weave are coated with in Example (1) composition B comprising: 95% of a copolymer of 85% ethyl acrylate 5% methylolated melamine acrylate in a solvent mixture composed of ethyl acetate ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, 2% methyl-phenyl silicone (R/Si=1.5) solution in toluene and catalysed with butyl polytitanate, colloidal silica and composition A comprising 58% of a copolymer containing 95% of butyl acrylate and 5% methylolated melamine acrylate, in a solvent mixture as in B, black iron oxide in propanol in (2) composition A comprising 79% of a copolymer of 90% ethyl acrylate, 7.5% methylolated p acrylamide, 2.5% glycol dimethacylate in aqueous emulsion, ammonium nitrate hexahydrate as cross-linking catalyst, ammonium polyacrylate as thickener, titanium dioxide and composition B comprising 95% of a 70% ethyl acrylate, 15% methyl methoacrylate, 15% methylolated melamine acrylate in a solvent mixture as in (1), colloidal silica, 2% of a silicone as in (1) in (3) composition A comprising 82% of a copolymer of 80% butyl acrylate, 7.5% methylolated acrylamide, 10% ethyl acrylate, 2.5% glycidyl methacrylate in aqueous emulsion, ammonium nitrate hexahydrate, ammonium polyacrylate, ground chalk, phthalocyanine blue and composition B comprising 85% of a copolymer of 68% ethyl acrylate, 22% methyl methacrylate, 7.5% methylolated acrylamide, 2.5% glycidyl methacrylate in aqueous emulsion, colloidal silica, a methyl-hydrogen silicone resin in aqueous emulsion catalysed by dibutyl tin diacetate, ammonium polyacrylate. The products are tested for feel, resistance to tear, resistance to ultraviolet rays, absorption of water, resistance to water pressure and resistance to microorganisms and compared with other coated linen and nylon covers.
