A method for making a steel alloy having an improved tool application and containing not more than 5% chromium, 5% molybdenum, 2% vanadium, and 0.4% titanium, the process comprising incorporating the alloying an amount of tungsten from 0.015 to 0.50% to inhibit the formation of coarse grains at an austenitization temperature of about 1120º C.
