Abstract
In a stabilizing system for a ship servo-operated fins on either side may, at will, be operated individually, simultaneously in the same direction, or differentially for stabilizing purposes. When one push button 24 is operated, a relay 16 is actuated to apply electric signals, produced by a gyro-accelerometer unit 12 in dependence on roll of a ship, through bridge comparators 5, 51 to servo-systems 6, 7 and 61, 71 adjusting, in opposite directions, stabilizing fins 2, 21 on opposite sides of the ship to counter the roll. Follow-up signals dependent on fin angle or thrust are applied from transducers 4, 41 to comparators 5, 51. If, instead, a push button 21 is operated and, during steering of the ship by means of a rudder 29, the tiller 30 is moved beyond predetermined limits, a switch 27 or 28 is closed to energize a relay 14 or 15 and apply a signal to comparator 5 or 51 so that the appropriate fin is operated to assist steering of the craft. Operation of one fin or the other may also be obtained by operation of a push button 22 or 23. If a push button 25 is operated, a relay 17 applies signals to both comparators 5, 51 so that both fins are raised together to brake forward motion of the ship.
