Abstract
A friction clutch comprises a friction plate which is splined to a hollow driven shaft which extends coaxially with and on the same side of the clutch as the driving shaft, and the driving shaft is connected to the inner periphery of a cover-plate. As shown in Fig. 1, a driven friction plate 27 can be clamped between an axially fixed reaction plate 22 having a starter gear 26 and a pressure plate 31 which is shifted axially to engage the clutch by a diaphragm spring 39. The cover member 13 is secured to the reaction plate 22 by bolts 23 and is secured to a hub 10 fast with the driving shaft 11 by bolts 16, the pressure plate 31 having extensions 50 passing through apertures 51 in the cover and engaging the periphery of the diaphragm 39. The clutch is disengaged by a throw-out bearing 48, the pressure plate extensions 50 being retained in contact with the diaphragm 39 by release springs 65. The pressure plate is secured for rotation with the driving shaft by resilient tangential tongues 33 riveted to the pressure plate and to the cover 13. In the modification of Fig. 6, the release springs 65 are dispensed with and the pressure plate 142 is retained in contact with the diaphragm spring 149 by hooks 155 engaging over the back of the diaphragm. The projections 50 are replaced by a ring 152 which is riveted to the pressure plate at 154. The cover plate 123 is corrugated or formed with reinforcing fins or webs and has a reinforcing ring 125 welded thereto. The pressure plate is again secured for rotation with the driving shaft by tangential flexible tongues secured to the pressure plate and the cover. In a further modification (Fig. 10) the pressure plate 142 is held against the diaphragm spring 149 by clips 155 and the pressure plate has axial extensions 160 passing through apertures 161 in the cover member 123. In this case the tangential driving tongues may be dispensed with, the pressure plate being driven by the extensions 160 engaging the sides of apertures 161.
