Abstract

Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized by incorporating therein a zinc salt of a fatty acid containing 8 to 20 carbon atoms, a calcium or magnesium salt of a fatty acid containing 8 to 20 carbon atoms, and a substituted dialkyl sulphide. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The polymers may be admixed with other polymers, e.g. butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers. Specified acids are 2-ethylhexoic, capric, nonanoic, myristic, palmitic and particularly lauric and stearic acids. Specified substituted dialkyl sulphides are di-b -hydroxyethyl sulphide and esters thereof, b -hydroxyethyl dodecyl sulphide and salts and esters of thio-dialkanoic acids, e.g. dilauryl thiodipropionate, distearyl thiodibutyrate, zinc thiodipropionate and calcium thiodipropionate. The compositions may also comprise other stabilizers, e.g. a -methyl glucoside, epoxidized soya bean oil and polymeric epoxides, pigments, fillers, plasticizers and lubricants. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, diisooctyl phthalate, zinc laurate, calcium laurate and dilauryl thiodipropionate.
