Abstract

An ultrasonics emulsifier comprises means 2 for projecting a jet 31, of fluid to be emulsified, on to the free end 8 of a metal element 9 which is thereby caused to vibrate at ultrasonic frequency, element 9 being surrounded by a bell 14 having a harmonic equal to the ultrasonic frequency of element 10. As shown, a mixture of liquid and another liquid or gas or colloidal dispersion is directed from means 2 (details Fig. 2, not shown) on to head 10 of element 9, which vibrates at 20,000 c/s, and is deflected into bells 11, 14, bell 14 having a natural frequency of 4000 c/s. Emulsion overflows bell 14 and passes down a sheath 30 and between a third bell 20 and casing 17 to outlet 26. Sheath 30 and bell 20 vibrate with bell 14 and element 9, and a magnet 23 is fitted. The vibrating system is carried by a stirrup 16, and the various threaded joints are fixed by thermosetting resin. Bell 14 is partly immersed, the level being maintained by overflow 27 and float 34 controlling valve 35, electrically or directly. The device may be heated or cooled and element 10 may be electrically vibrated. Resonance is achieved by adjusting flow rate and delivery pressure. Inner bell 11 may also resonate. The device is used to prepare gasoline/water or fuel/water mixtures possibly with additional air, or glue, paint or food, possibly with solid particles. Repeated recycling may be used to produce a gel.
