Abstract

A machine for forming a web of randomly arranged fibres includes a moving foraminous condenser surface and a feed reservoir adjacent the condenser, there being also means to supply fibres to the reservoir and -to maintain a substantially constant level in it. The reservoir 13 is defined on one side by a fixed back plate 14 and on the other side by a metering roll 15 which may be driven by a variable speed D.C. motor and mounted so as to allow adjustment of the space between the metering roll and the backplate, thereby adjusting the final thickness of the condensed web for given roll and drum rotational speeds. A variable speed hydraulic transmission may be employed to drive the condensing drum 10. To maintain the reservoir full to the level of the upper edge 20 of the backplate, a spiked feed sheet or belt 21 transports fibres from a supply hopper. At the upper end of the feed belt 21 the fibers are stripped by an air blast from a box 23. Excess fibres at the reservoir are picked off by the spikes on the return run 25 of the belt 21.
