Procedure for obtaining vinyl compositions improving their stability at elevated temperatures, concerning the chlorination of polyvinyl chloride in order to obtain a chlorinated polyvinyl chloride with a better thermal stability than the initial polyvinyl chloride, characterized by the following main points, considered joint or in isolation, or in any combination; chlorine gas is passed in a stirred and photo-luminous suspension in an inert liquid diluent medium having a boiling point not exceeding about 100º C, whose suspension is composed of macro-granular particles of a polyvinyl chloride resin, preserving at all times in this suspension, (1) a maximum temperature of around 65ºC, (2) an excess of dissolved chlorine, and (3) a degree of photochemical activity that does not exceed what is allowed by the maintenance of this excess of chlorine , this polyvinyl chloride resin having a molecular weight at least equal to that of a polyvinyl chloride of a specific viscosity of 0.40 and not exerting this diluting medium if not a moderate swelling action on this resin and its chlorinated products, and separates a solid chlorinated product from this suspension.
