Abstract
Internal aliphatic olefins are obtained by the selective dehydrohalogenation of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing an internal halogen substituent which are in admixture with terminally halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons. The reaction is accomplished by heating the mixture of halogenated hydrocarbons in the liquid phase in the presence of an organic salt of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table as a catalyst to a temperature sufficient to effect the desired selective dehydrohalogenation. The olefins may be subsequently hydrogenated to give alkanes.ALSO:Primary aliphatic hydrocarbon halides are produced from an organic halide system comprising a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon or a mixture of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons in which system there is at least one terminal halogen substitutent and at least one internal dehydrohalogenatable halogen substituent, said substituents being in the same or different hydrocarbons and each substituent being Cl, Br or I, by heating said system in the liquid phase in the presence of an organic salt of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table as a catalyst to a temperature sufficient to effect the selective dehydrohalogenation of the internal halogen substituents but insufficient to effect the dehydrohalogenation of the terminal halogen substituents of said halogenated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbons. The initial mixture may be obtained by halogenation of a hydrocarbon and the olefinic products may be hydrogenated prior to separation from the primary halides.
