Abstract

Internal and/or external metallic images are made by exposing an aluminium or aluminium alloy carrier having its surface oxidized to form a porous oxide layer separated from the metal of the carrier by a non-porous intermediate layer, the porous layer being sensitized with a photosensitive compound whose light-reaction product will deposit metallic mercury from mercurous ions, treating the exposed carrier with a nuclearintroduction bath comprising a solution containing mercurous ions with or without silver ions to form a latent mercury or silver amalgam nuclear image, and intensifying the latent image with metal, e.g. silver, copper, nickel, cobalt or nickel and cobalt, by treatment with a solution of a salt of such a metal and a reducing agent for said salt. Internal dye images may be obtained by intensifying the latent image using a silver physical developer containing a colour coupler and a phenylene diamine colour developer followed by removal of the metallic image. A mercuric ion adsorption effect which may occur during the nuclear-introduction step and cause fogging is prevented or suppressed by (i) adjusting the concentration of the mercuric ions in the nuclearintroduction bath up to a value of at least 10<-4> molar, (ii) treating the porous oxide layer before sensitization with a solution of a mercuric compound or (iii) adding an organic hydroxy acid e. g. citric, tartaric, glycollic, glyceric or malic acid to the nuclear-introduction bath or (iv) otherwise treating the latent nuclear image prior to intensification with a solution of such an acid. When a dye image is to be formed the latent nuclear image may be treated with a citric acid or glycollic acid solution to prevent colour fog. The intensification step may be conducted by the method described in Specification 1, 64, 725. Oxidation methods for forming the porous and non-porous layers on the carrier are described and photo-sensitive compounds specified for use in the process are aromatic diazosulphonates such as sodium o-methoxybenzene diazosulphonate, aromatic diazocyanides, o-hydroxybenzene or -naphthalene diazonium compounds, o- or p-nitro-mandelonitrile, the bisulphite compounds of o- and p-nitrobenzaldehyde and inorganic metal complex compounds liberating CN<->, CNS<->, NO<->2, SO3<=>, S2O3<=>, NH3, pyridine or derivatives thereof or thiourea or derivatives thereof.
