Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1041273/C2/1> wherein X is a 1-tetralylidene group, and R1 is an alkyl group, and their preparation by condensing a 1-vinyl-1-hydroxy-tetralin with the corresponding 2-alkyl-cyclopentane-1,3-dione. The products may be substituted at the 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 6- or 7-positions of the seco-steroid nucleus, for example by a hydroxy or etherified hydroxy group at the 3-position or by alkyl groups having up to 4 carbon atoms at the 6- or 7-positions. 1-Vinyl-1-hydroxy-tetralins are prepared by reaction of the corresponding tetralone with vinyl magnesium chloride. 6-Benzyloxy- and 21-tetrahydropyranyloxy-1-tetralones are prepared by etherifying 6-hydroxy-1-tetralone. 3-Methyl-6-methoxy-1-tetralone is prepared by cyclizing 3-m-methoxybenzyl-butyric acid. 3-m-Methoxybenzyl-butyric acid is prepared by hydrogenating ethyl 3-m-methoxybenzyl-but-2-enoate and hydrolysing the ester group.
