Abstract
Method of removing radioactive ionized contaminants from the milk in an electrodialysis cell having electrodes located at each of its ends and carrying a plurality of repeating units, each unit being provided with three adjacent compartments, the central compartment bounded by both sides by ion exchange membranes of the same selectivity and the compartments contiguous to that defined by their external sides by an ion exchange membrane of selectivity contrary to that of the said membranes limiting said central compartment: the method comprising the steps of passing the contaminated milk of radioactive ions through said central compartment, passing an electrolyte solution transversely through said adjacent compartments, having at least one of said electrolyte solutions a content of non-radioactive ions to reconstitute "in situ" the mineral salts content of the milk in said central compartment, passing a direct current transversely through the compartments and the membranes of a plurality of said units that are repeated to cause the electric migration of ions through said solutions and membranes, and withdrawing from said central compartment a milk solution that has a lower amount of radioactive ions than initially present in milk and that contains essentially the concentration of uncontaminated minerals normally present in milk.
