Abstract

In a sub-halide distillation process for the recovery of aluminium from alloys containing manganese which are solid at the reaction temperature, the sub-halide vapour is condensed in two stages (1) with continuous addition of fresh alloy and removal of spent alloy until a predetermined level of manganese in the effluent is reached and (2) with the supply of fresh alloy, and optionally the withdrawal of spent alloy, stopped, continuing to pass the trihalide vapour until all the aluminium, that economically can be, has been stripped out. The gaseous products of the two stages are condensed separately. During the charging of fresh alloy and withdrawing of the stripped alloy for starting a fresh cycle the trihalide flow is reduced or stopped. Using aluminium trichloride as the reactant the temperature in the convertor is 1000-1400 DEG C. and the condenser is preferably at a temperature of 700-900 DEG C. Two or more condensers may be used to collect the different fractions or one may be used with intermediate emptying between stages.
