Abstract

Coil windings of electrical apparatus are coated with a slip coating and then with an outer coating which provides a relatively strong flexible skin, the arrangement being such that during subsequent forming (e.g. bending into a curved shape) of the coil so covered the outer coating can move relatively to the turns of the coil. The slip coating may be powdered asbestine, diatomaceous earth, mica, talc, china clay, barytes, pumice, precipitated or natural calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or silica, and may be applied dry or in a liquid vehicle, by dipping, brushing, spraying or wiping suitable binders include cellulose ethers, natural and synthetic rubber, polyvinyl and polyacrylic resins, and alginates. The outer coating may be polyvinyl chloride or propionate used as a plastisol, organosol or aqueous emulsion, or a rubber-resin composition such as a synthetic rubber plus a phenolic resin, and may be applied by dipping.
