Abstract
Animal tissue is extratced with a non-ionic surfactant solution, is extracted with a fat solvent, is extracted with a non-ionic surfactant solution and is then washed with water it is stated that the thus-treated tissue is more likely to be compatible with a tissue to which it is subsequently grafted and is far easier to store for long periods. In a preferred procedure, animal bone is exercized under sanitary conditions, the bone is soaked in a sterilising solution of about 0.5 to 5.0% salt concentration, the bone is extracted with an aqueous surfactant solution containing about 0.5 to 2.0% of a pastial ester of a higher unsaturated fatty acid with an anhydride of a polyhydroxy alcohol surfactant, the bone is extracted with chleroform-methanol solution for about 20 to 30 hours, the bone is extracted with a further non-ionic aqueous surfactant solution, the bone is washed with continuously changing water for about 48 to 200 hours, and the washed bone is sterilized and then byophilized. Animal tissue includes bone, cartilage, tendon or fascia. Fat solvents: chloroform, acetone, lower aliphatic alcohols such as methanols or mixtures of these. Surfactants: partial esters of higher unsaturated fatty acids with anhydrides of polyhydroxy alcohols and polyoxyethylene derivatives thereof, particularly sorbitan mono-oleate polyoxyethylene and specified proprietary products. For sterilisation there may be employed inter alia solutions containing, liquid b -propiolactone, or cathode irradiation. Examples disclose detailed procedures.
