Procedure for obtaining new amino acids of formula ** (See formula) ** where R1 is a levyalkyl, R2 and R3 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and levyalkyls, R4 and R5 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and levyalkanols, and X is taken from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogens, alkyls and trifluoromethyl; which comprises the reaction of a ketone of the following structure formula: ** (See formula) ** where R6 is taken from the group consisting of hydrogen and levyalkyls, with a water-soluble cyanhydride salt and ammonium carbonate in an aqueous medium, to form a hydantoin; the reaction of said hydantoin with a base in an aqueous medium at elevated temperature, to form an acid of the formula ** (See formula) ** in the reaction of this acid with an aqueous hydrazide at a high temperature; and the isolation, of the reaction mixture, of a dihydroxyphenylalanine from the structure ** (See formula) ** said alanine being esterified by heating it with a levialcanol in the presence of an inorganic acid; said alanine being able to be fully acylated by heating it with a light alkanoic anhydride, in the presence of an organic base; and the hydroxyls can be acylated by simply adding a light alkanoic anhydride to a well-stirred aqueous caustic solution of said alanine, with sufficient caustic to neutralize 80-100% of the acid present at the end of the acylation.
