Abstract

The invention comprises bis-tertiary glycols of the general formula <FORM:0922681/IV(a)/1> in which R1 is a low alkyl radical or a cyclopropyl radical, R2 is a low alkyl radical or together with R1 forms an alkylene radical, and R3 is a low alkyl radical, so that the total number of carbon atoms in the radicals R1, R2 and R3 is 5 or 6 and in the radicals R1 and R3 together is 4 or 5. They may be prepared by (a) the partial catalytic hydrogenation of a bis-tertiary glycol of formula <FORM:0922681/IV(a)/2> or (b) by the reaction in a low aliphatic or cyclic ether of a compound of formula <FORM:0922681/IV(a)/3> in which X is a magnesium halide radical or an a -alkoxy alkyl radical in which the alkoxy and alkyl radicals may be linked to each other by a carbon-carbon linkage, with a vinyl magnesium halide and liberating the bis-tertiary glycol from the product by hydrolysis. The acetylenic bis-tertiary glycols used as starting materials may be obtained by ethinylating a -hydroxy ketones of formula <FORM:0922681/IV(a)/4> which may be obtained by a Grignard reaction between the tetrahydropyranyl ethers of cyanohydrins of the corresponding ketones followed by liberation of the hydroxyl and keto groups. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) 3,4-dimethyl-heptene-(1)-diol-(3,4) (b) 3,4,6-trimethyl-heptene-(1)-diol-(3,4) and (c) 3,4-diethyl-hexene-(1)-diol-(3,4). It is stated that the following compounds may be obtained by similar methods: 3,4,5-trimethylhexene-(1)-diol-(3,4) 3,4,5,5- tetramethyl-hexene-(1)-diol-(3,4) 3,4-dimethyl-octene-(1)-diol-(3,4) 3-methyl-4-cyclopropyl-pentene-(1)-diol-(3,4) 3-(11-hydroxycyclopentyl)- butene-(1)-ol-(3) 3-(11-hydroxycyclohexyl)- butene-(1)-ol-(3) 3-n-propyl-4- methyl-pentene- (1)-diol-(3,4) 3-i-propyl- 4-methyl-pentene- (1)-diol-(3,4) and 3-i-propyl- 4-methylhexene-(1)-diol-(3,4).
