Abstract

A process for making a tetraalkyl lead product by electrolysing the corresponding Grignard alcohole reagent with a lead anode in the presence of excess alkyl halide, characterized in that (a) the electrolysis is carried out in the presence of an ether boiling at a higher temperature that said tetralcohyl lead product; (b) after electrolysis, the unreacted Grignard reagent is hydrolyzed with dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid to form an organic phase and an aqueous phase containing magnesium halide; (c) and at least a part of the resulting organic phase is distilled to separate a head of tetralcohyl lead product from the ether glues for return to the cycle.
