Abstract

A method of forming a press closure at the end of a vitreous tube, such as a quartz tube, which comprises heating the end of said tube until it becomes plastic, applying pressure to opposite sides of only a preselected portion of said end of said tube. Heated tube, while continuing its heating, to crush and close said part, and then simultaneously heat the partially closed end of said tube and compress only the non-closed part thereof to extend the closure through the entire width of said end of said tube.
