Abstract
An overhead power cable or earth conductor (10) has one or more optical fibres (11) therein within a conductive tube (14), which is surrounded by reinforcing elements (15) and conductive elements (18), the optical elements being protected against damage by vibration by having at least one protective element (13). The fibres may have individual protective sheaths (12) and be laid so as to avoid torsion. The reinforcing and conductive elements (15, 18) and the conductive elements are formed (at least on their surfaces) of the same metal to avoid electro- chemical effects.
