Abstract
A luminescent material excited by ultra-violet radiation or cathode-rays comprises gallium nitride containing as activator at least one of Li, Na, Cu, Ag, Au, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, In, Tl, Sn and Pb in the proportion of 10-5 to 10-2 mol. of activating element per mol. of gallium nitride. Coactivators can be incorporated comprising at least one of O, S, Se, Te and F in the proportion of 10-5 to 10-2 mol. of coactivating element per mol. of gallium nitride. In one process of preparation gallium or a material containing gallium is heated in an ammonia atmosphere to a temperature between 300 DEG C. and 1200 DEG C. for a period of from 5 minutes to 10 hours in the presence of one or more activators with or without one or more coactivators. In another process an alloy of lithium, and gallium in substantially equal molecular amounts is heated in an ammonia atmosphere to a temperature between 300 DEG C. and 700 DEG C. for a period of time such that an amount of lithium effective as activator is left in the gallium nitride formed. At least one other activator can be present with or without one or more coactivators. In a further process lithium-gallium nitride is heated in an ammonia atmosphere to a temperature between 700 DEG C. and 1000 DEG C. for a time such that an amount of lithium effective as activator is left in the gallium nitride formed.
