Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble salts of dyestuffs which contain a single anthraquinone nucleus, are free from acid water-solubilising groups and have attached to the anthraquinone nucleus at least one group of the formula:-NH-R-NHCOA-Q where R is alkylene or phenylene, A is alkylene which may be substituted by aryl and which may be interrupted by an amino group and Q is a salt of a tertiary or quaternary ammonium group and an acid. The dyestuffs are made by acylating an appropriate anthraquinone which contains at least one group of the formula: -NH-R-NH2 with a halide of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid which contains a tertiary or quaternary ammonium group or a halogen atom in a - or b -position to the carboxylic acid halide group, and in the latter case condensing the product with a secondary or tertiary amine or with an alkylene diamine having one tertiary and one primary or secondary amino group and, if desired, treating the product with an alkylating agent. Examples are given. The salts dye tanned cellulose fibres, silk hair or fibres of asymmetrical dicyanethylene polymers or of polyacryolnitrile or polyesters in a variety of shades.
