Tobacco pack

Background

This invention relates to packaging or packaging for tobacco. In particular, the invention relates to a package and elementary parts for making the package.

Traditionally, cut tobacco that is used by consumers in products for "rolling" or rolling by oneself (RYO) is packaged in tobacco bags. The consumer removes a portion of tobacco from the bag before making a smoker item, such as a cigarette with the use of a separate cigarette paper.

Tobacco bags are conventionally formed from a sheet of plastic material that is folded or folded along an edge to form a closed edge and an overlapping part. The overlapping part is hermetically sealed around two lateral edges to form a cavity in which it is contained in cut tobacco. The bags typically have a skirt or flap that extends from a rear wall of the bag and folds over the open end to prevent waste of the contents. The use of the bag for prolonged periods of time may result in deterioration of the freshness and taste of the cut tobacco. The deterioration of quality of the cut tobacco may be due to the loss of moisture or aroma from the cut tobacco. Simply folding a skirt over the opening of the bag may not be enough to eliminate the deterioration of the cut tobacco contained in it.

GB 530 316 describes a package according to the preamble of claim 1.

Summary

A first aspect of the invention provides a package for cut tobacco comprising a container and a lid attached to the container, the container comprising front and rear panels, two opposite side panels and an end panel, in which an opening opposite the panel is provided of end, the lid being articulated to the rear panel articulated and operable to extend through the opening and at least part of the front panel, the cover comprising two or more consecutive cover panels, in which a first of the two or more consecutive lid panels provide the articulated joint to the rear panel and the last of the two or more consecutive lid panels has application means that are operable to be applied with the container; The package contains a tobacco bag containing tobacco cut for a product for "rolling" by oneself and in which a surface of the tobacco bag corresponding to the rear panel of the container is extensible on an inner surface of the lid.

The cover can extend through the entire front panel. The cover can extend through the entire front panel and at least part of the bottom panel. In addition, the package is suitable for use in stalls, such as those conventionally used in the sale of other tobacco-related products, such as cigarettes. The stalls include sales machines, sales presentation cabinets and the like from which smoker items are presented and sold.

The container can provide complementary application means to be applied with the application means. The application means and the complementary application means can be provided by hook and loop type fasteners (Velcro®). Alternatively, the application means may be provided by adhesive applied to the lid and / or the container. A suitable adhesive may be of the semi-permanent type, for example gummed paper or glued paper having a support that can be removed to reveal the adhesive surface. Complementary application means may be provided by a joint to the container or by a surface or an edge of the container. The complementary application means are provided in the region of the container with which the application means make contact with the lid when closing it.

In an alternative embodiment, the application means can be a tongue and the complementary application means can be a groove or groove into which the tongue can be inserted. A tongue can extend from one or more edges of the lid. Accordingly, one or more grooves may be provided in corresponding edges or panels forming the container; the corresponding edges or panels are provided by the part or parts of the container with which the application means make contact with the lid when closing it.

One or more tabs may extend from one edge of the last of the two or more consecutive cover panels and may be inserted into a slot or complementary grooves. The groove or grooves may be provided near an edge of the package. The edge, which includes the groove or grooves therein, can be any edge of the package that is parallel with the opening; that is, the edge of the container that corresponds to the position of the leading edge of the lid when it is closed. Preferably, the groove is provided on an edge defined by the union of the front panel and the end panel. Alternatively, the slot can be provided in at least one of the front panel, end panel or rear panel, with which the last of the cover panels coincides and makes the closure resting against the front, end or rear panel.

In addition or alternatively, one or more tabs may extend from one or both side edges of the lid and corresponding complementary grooves or grooves may be provided on a corresponding side edge or a corresponding side panel of the container.

The tongue and groove combination can provide the consumer with a reliable container that can be re-sealed.

The lid may have folds or weakening lines that correspond to the edges of the container such that the lid can be folded around the edges of the container.

In an alternative embodiment, in which the lid can be operable to extend through the opening and at least the entire front panel of the container, the last of the two or more consecutive stage panels has three free edges provided by a first lateral edge, a second lateral edge and a leading edge; a first closing panel, a second closing panel and a third closing panel depend on the first side edge, the second side edge and the front edge respectively, the third closing panel being attached to both the first and the second closing panel in adjacent edges thereby providing an edge, which when closing the lid, the edge overlaps with corresponding panels of the container.

The lid can comprise three panels such that, in addition to extending over the opening and the entire front panel, it can also extend over the entire end panel. Alternatively, the lid can comprise four panels, such that it extends over the opening, the entire front panel, the entire end panel and the entire rear panel.

The combination of closure panels and closing edges can provide the consumer with a container that can be re-sealed tightly reliable.

The closure arrangement may be such that there is an interference fit between the flange and the container, in which the opening is effected only by active movement of the lid.

The opening may be formed by a recessed part in the front panel. The recessed portion may be of any suitable form to allow easier access to the contents of the container. The recessed portion may be formed by a section that can be removed, which may be articulated along an edge of the container. The provision of an articulated joint to the container helps eliminate a potential disposal problem of the section that can be removed. The withdrawal or opening of the section that can be removed by a person other than the consumer may be indicative of manipulation.

The contents of the container may be a tightly sealed bag containing tobacco. Therefore, the removal or opening of the section that can be removed allows access to the seal of the bag. Therefore, the withdrawal

or opening of the section that can be removed by a person other than the consumer may be indicative of tampering with the seal and / or the contents of the bag.

The first of the consecutive panels that form the lid has no skirt or panel attached to its edges that corresponds to the sides of the package. Therefore, when the layer is closed there may be a slight gap between the side edge of the lid and the side panel of the container. To close the vacuum, the side panels of the container can each comprise a skirt that extends from an edge corresponding to the opening of the container. The skirts are foldable towards the container in such a way that when closing, the lid abuts the skirts, thereby eliminating the vacuum. The skirts are also operable to reinforce the side panels of the package reducing the incidence of deformation of the side panels that can be caused by the part of the lid that makes contact with the upper edge of the side panel that coincides with the opening of the container. The skirts can also be operable to reduce the entry of dirt and dust into the container. Other aspects of the present invention set forth in the claims provide elementary parts and methods for making a package according to the first aspect of the invention.

The elementary piece can be folded by manual folding or by an automatic folding process or a combination of both to form a package according to a first aspect of the present invention.

The method of folding the elementary piece to form the package may first involve placing a bag containing tobacco on the elementary piece and then folding or folding the elementary piece around the bag.

Alternatively, the package can be partially erected so that the bag is inserted into the container part before completing the erection of the package. The partial erection of the elementary piece may involve folding at least some of the panels that form the elementary piece to make a tube that has two openings or folding at least some of the panels that form the elementary piece to manufacture a container with an opening in an extreme. The erection of the package can be completed after the content is inserted and folding any remaining panels of the container and the panels that form the lid around the bag.

Description of the realizations

Generally, the continuous lines of the figures indicate through edges or cuts and the dashed or dashed lines indicate folded or folded lines around which the components of the elementary pieces are folded to manufacture the package 100 and the P bag. With reference to fig. 2, the dashed line shown on the front panel 8 of the container 2 represents the boundaries of a section 18a that can be removed from the front panel 8. In one embodiment, section 18a can be completely removed to allow access to the container. In another embodiment, section 18a may be articulated with the container along an edge to allow access to the container.

With reference to figs. 1a, 1b and 2 the package 100 is in the form of a rectangular box and is made of any suitable material such as cardboard, paper or plastic. The package 100 is intended to contain cut tobacco, which is preferably contained in a bag P. An example of a bag P is illustrated in figs. 3a and 4b. Sliced tobacco (not shown) can be used to make smoking items to "roll" by oneself (RYO) or do it yourself, such as cigarettes.

The package 100 comprises a container 2 and a lid 4, in which the container 2 has a rectangular shape and is open at an end A2 (not visible in Fig. 2). The container 2 comprises a front panel 8, two side panels 10 (not visible in Figs. 1a, 1b and 2) and 12, a rear panel 14 (not visible in Figs. 1a, 1b and 2) and a panel of limb 16, which is located opposite the open end A2.

In one embodiment (see Figs. 1a and 1b), the opening at the open end A2 is increased by the provision of a generally U-shaped cutout 18 on the front panel 8. The increased opening 18 facilitates access to the contents of the container 2. An alternative embodiment is illustrated in fig. 2, in which the container 2 comprises a section 18a that can be removed on the front panel 8. The consumer can remove the section 18a to gain access to the bag of

tobacco contained inside. Section 18a may be articulated along an edge to the front panel 8 or to some other part of the container as appropriate.

The lid 4 is in one piece with the container 2 and is articulated around the upper edge of the rear panel 14. The upper edge coincides with the open end A2 of the container 2.

With reference to figs. 1a, 1b and 2 the cover 4 comprises two rectangular panels 20 and 22. One of the panels 20 is sized to correspond with the end panel 16 of the container 2, whose panel 20 will hereafter be referred to as the end panel 20 of lid and the other rectangular panel 22 is sized to correspond with the front panel 8 of the container 2, whose panel 22 will hereafter be referred to as the front panel of the lid

When closing the package 100 (see fig. 1b), the lid end panel 20 covers the open end A2 and forms an end panel 20 of the closed package 100. When the lid end panel 20 is closed it is opposite the panel 16 of container tip. The front cover panel 22 is connected to the cover end panel 20 around a fold line LF2. When closing the package 100, the front panel 22 rotates around the fold line LF2 such that the front panel 22 covers the front panel 8 of the container 2. When the package 100 is closed the fold line LF2 it forms an edge E2 of the closed package 100 (see fig. 1b). The edge E2 is the junction of the lid end panel 20 and the front cover panel 22.

The cover 4 further comprises a closure tab 24, which protrudes from the leading edge E1 of the front cover panel 22. The tongue 24 is attached to the front cover panel 22 around the articulation / folding line LF3 such that upon closing, the tongue 24 can be folded through 90 degrees and inserted into a groove 26 provided on the edge E3 of the container. The groove 26 is a through cut on the common edge E3 of the front panel 8 of the container and the end panel 16 of the container. When the tongue 24 is closed, it is opposite the lid end panel 20.

When the package 100 is opened, the lid 4 provides a tray on which the tobacco can be dispensed and a surface on which the consumer can make a RYO smoking article such as a cigarette.

The package 100 is similarly sized in size to a cigarette package, which if purchased at a wholesale outlet such as a store is generally presented at a dispenser or alternatively sold at a vending machine. An example of suitable packaging is that which contains cigarettes that are 83 mm long or cigarettes that are 100 mm long. Other known package sizes are suitable.

With reference to fig. 1b, an example is a package 100 that normally contains twenty "giant size" cigarettes ("King size"), which are 83 mm long. The package 100 has a length L of approximately 85 mm, a width W of approximately 55 mm and a depth D of approximately 20 mm. Such a package is suitable for containing approximately 25 g of tobacco either in a single bag or in two bags, each containing 12.5 g of tobacco.

With reference to figs. 3a and 4b, examples of suitable P bags have been shown. The P bag is made of a flexible material, which is suitable for containing cut tobacco. Examples of suitable materials are paper, which can be metallic or plastic paper or a combination of both. Alternatively, a stratified plastic bag that has heat-sealed edges can be used in package 100.

The glue can be applied inside the back panel of the container 2 of the package 100, such that the bag is retained in the package.

The bag P as illustrated in figs. 3a and 4b have bellows edges. The sides with bellows on the bag P of figs. 3a and 4b are extensible and therefore allow more tobacco to be carried in the bag than in a stratified bag of similar size and having heat-sealed edges.

The bag P comprises a container part P2 and a closing skirt P3. The container part P2 of the bag is deeper than the container part 2 of the package 100 such that when the bag P is inserted into the package 100, part of the container portion P2 of the bag fits inside the container 2 of the package 100 and when the package 100 and the bag P are opened the upper section X of the container part P2 of the bag protrudes from the opening A2 of the container 2.

In the example illustrated in figs. 3a and 3b, the bag P is made from a rectangular sheet PS having fold lines PF1 and PF2 along its length that divides the sheet substantially into three separate rectangular sections PS1, PS2 and PS3. The rectangular sections are further divided by the fold line PF3 and PF4 on the front part F of the bag and on the back part R of the bag. The folding lines PF3 and PF4 define the edges PE3, PE4 respectively of the end panel P4 of the container part P2 of the bag (see fig. 3a).

The bag P is formed by folding the two outer rectangular sections, PS1 and PS2 through 90 degrees around the fold lines PF1 and PF2 respectively to form upturned parts P5 and P6 (see fig. 3a). He

front panel F is then folded around the folding lines PF3 and PF4 such that the free edges PE5 and PE6 (see fig. 3a) of the upside-up part P5 and P6, which are connected to the front part F of the container part P2 of the bag meet the corresponding free edges PE5 and PE6 of the upturned part P5 and P6 which is connected to the back of the bag R. The corresponding edges PE5 and PE6 on each side of the front and rear panels F, R are joined together to form the container part P2, which has bellows sides and the closing skirt P3.

Figs. 4a and 4b illustrate an alternative elementary part for forming a bag P. The bag P is made from a substantially rectangular sheet PS in which a rear panel RP, a front panel FP and a base panel BP have been defined; each of the panels being the same width. The BP base panel is defined between the front and rear panels FP, RP. Each of the front and rear panels FP, RP has a side panel P5, P6 that extends from each of its longitudinal edges.

The boundary of each panel is defined by external edges (shown as solid lines in fig. 4a) and folding lines (shown as dashed lines in fig. 4a). The base panel BP is foldable around its center line during the construction of the bag and as such a folding line PF5 is indicated as a dashed line in fig. 4th. The folding lines PF1, PF2, PF3, PF4 and PF5 can be provided by a fold in the elementary piece or by a perforation line.

The rectangular sheet that forms the elementary piece PS is located between two sheets of transparent plastic PS2, or in a transparent plastic bag that is open at one or two ends to allow the insertion of the elementary piece PS. The sheets or PS2 bag are rectangular and are sized slightly larger than the total dimension of the elementary piece so that there is a plastic overhang.

With reference to fig. 4b, the bag P is formed by folding the base panel BP around the folding line PF5 and folding the front and rear panels FP and RP around the folding lines PF4 and PF3 respectively such that the folded base panel BP is sandwiched between the front and rear panels FP, RP. The edges of the side panels are carried together and the plastic at the edges is joined together to tightly close the side edges and the bottom of the Bag.

A bag is formed that has an open end. The side panels P5 and P6 are folded inwards to be sandwiched between the front and rear panels (see fig. 4b (ii)).

With tobacco in the bag, the bag is tightly closed to keep the tobacco fresh. The seal of the bag is first made by folding the closing skirt P3 around the upper edge of the bag container P2 such that the closing skirt P3 makes contact with the front panel FP (fig. 4b (ii)).

In both examples, after filling the bag P with tobacco the bag P is closed by folding the closing skirt P3 around the upper edge of the front panel of the bag to bring the closing skirt P3 in contact with the front panel F; FP; closing, therefore, the open end of the bag P. Subsequently, the upper section X is folded in such a way that the edge of the closing skirt P3 is hidden inside the subsequent fold and that the bag P is sized in such a way which is contained inside the container 2 when it is inserted in the package 100.

A line of glue G1, for example hot melt glue, can be applied to the front of the container part P2 of the bag to hold the closing skirt in place such that the bag P is held tightly closed. Until its first use. A releasable tab 50 may be provided such that the bag is releasable after the first time it has been opened.

The closing skirt P3 comprises a tray-like structure, which includes the upturned parts P5, P6 one on each side such that when the package 100 is opened, the upturned parts remain substantially erect and help reduce the waste of cut tobacco from the open package 100.

The back of the closing skirt P3 and / or the inner surface of the layer 4 can have adhesive applied to them such that when the package 100 is opened the back of the closing skirt P3 can be glued to the cover 4 for keep the P3 closing skirt in place while tobacco is being dispensed and rolling or rolling smoker items.

With reference to figs. 5 and 6a, examples of a first elementary piece B1 and a second elementary piece B2 for making the package 100 are shown. In figs. 5 and 6a, the continuous lines indicate through edges or cuts, and the dashed lines indicate fold lines around which the elementary pieces B1 and B2 are folded to form the package 100.

Both elementary pieces B1, B2 are formed from a single piece that is marked by folding lines to define the panels of the formed package 100. Similar reference numbers are applied to elementary parts B1 and B2 (see figs. 5 and 6a ) and package 100 (see fig. 1) in such a way that the panels that form the elementary pieces B1, B2 are consistently indicated.

The first elementary piece B1 is substantially rectangular in shape and the second elementary piece B2 is substantially L-shaped. Both elementary pieces B1 and B2 each comprise a front panel 8, side panels 10, 12, an end panel 16, a panel rear 14, a cover end panel 20, a front cover panel 22, a front panel 22 'of cover reinforcement and a closure tab 24, which is cut from the reinforcement panel 22', but is connected from articulated shape to the front panel 22 of the lid around the fold line LF3. In addition, each of the elementary pieces B1 and B2 has skirts 17, 17 'that extend from the edge of the side panels 10, 12 that are adjacent to the cover.

The additional panels 10 ', 12' are provided in the first elementary piece B1 in order to allow the panels 10 ', 12' to be glued to the panels 10, 12 respectively to the erection of the package 100. With reference to the second elementary piece B2, an additional side panel 12 'is provided and when the package 100 is erected the side panel 12' is attached to the side panel 12 to form one of the two side panels 10, 12 of the package 100 erected . The additional extension tabs 10 ", 12" and 16 ‘are provided as part of the second elementary piece B2. In the example shown, the tabs 10 "and 12" extend from the side panels 10 and 12 'respectively and the tongue 16' extends from the end panel 16 and is foldable around the folding line CF26, which forms the common edge E2 of the back panel 14 and of the end panel 16 on the erected package 100 (see figs. 1 and 2). The extension tab 16 ’provides a closing skirt (not visible in Figs. 1 and 2) that is located between the rear panel 14 and the bag P in the erected package 100. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the panel 16 'is not required, instead a traditional end panel depends on the rear panel 14 such that on the package erected, the front panel 16 and the additional panel overlap to close the package.

In both the first and second elementary pieces B1, B2, a groove 26 is provided in part of the folding line CF6, which is between the front panel 8 and the end panel 16 and forms the edge E3 of the erected package 100. The tongue 24 is inserted into the slot 26 when the package 100 is closed so that the package 100 is held in a closed position until the tongue 24 is removed from the slot 26.

The method of constructing the package 100 from the elementary piece B1 involves placing the full bag P on the back panel 14 of the package 100 and erecting the package 100 around the full bag P. Alternatively, the package 100 can be erected until the operation prior to the lid being formed and the bag P can be inserted through the open end A2 which is adjacent to the lid 4.

The method of constructing the package 100 from the elementary piece B2 involves erecting the package 100 and inserting the full bag P into the erected package 100. Bag P can be inserted through one of two open ends A1, A2 (see figs. 1 and 6b).

Both examples of the elementary piece B1, B2 show a cover reinforcement panel 22 'that when forming the package 100 is folded in 180 degrees and can be glued to the front panel 22 to form a double-thick cover, which is more rigid than a single panel / thickness lid. Alternatively, the cover reinforcement panel 22 'can simply be folded against the cover panel 22 to provide a more rigid cover 4 when closing, but that when opening the package 100, the reinforcement panel 22' can be deployed around its LF3 junction with the front cover panel 22 to form an extended surface to prepare RYO smoking articles such as cigarettes.

The cover reinforcement panel 22 ’can be omitted.

Alternatively, additional panels may be added to the cover 4, thereby extending the cover 4. Accordingly, the positions of the tongue 24 and the groove 26 can be altered such that the closure of the assembled package 100 can be effected around another edge or even on one of the front panel 8, the end panel 16, the back panel 14 or the end cap 20 of the package 100.

An example of operations of the method used to erect a package 100 from the first elementary part B1 is as follows:

Fold the cover reinforcement panel 22 ’(if used) around the fold line LF3 in face-to-face contact with the front panel 22;

10 The tongue 24 is foldable through 90 degrees around the fold line LF3 and is inserted into the groove 26, thereby enclosing the full P bag and blocking the package 100. This operation can be done by the consumer after the first opening of the package 100 such as to close it tightly again.

An alternative method for forming the package 100 from the elementary piece B1, can be to insert the bag P containing tobacco after the container 2 has been formed. The second elementary piece B2 is partially erected in such a way as to provide a tube 30 (see Fig. 6b). The bag P, filled with tobacco, can be inserted into the tube 30 and the remaining panels of the container 2 and the layer 4 are folded around the bag to form a completely erected package 100.

An example of the erection sequence of the package 100 from the second elementary piece B2 is the following:

As in the package 100 formed from the elementary part B1, the closure tab 24 is intended to be used by the consumer to use a package that can be reopened and re-closed by the interaction of the closure tab 24 with the groove 26. When the reinforcement panel 22 'is used, the closure tab 24 may remain embedded in the reinforcement panel 22' until the consumer takes the closure tab 24 from the reinforcement panel 22 '. The closure tab 24 is foldable through 90 degrees around the fold line LF3 and is inserted into the groove 26, thereby enclosing the full P bag and blocking the package 100. The package 100 can be reopened and returned to close easily by the consumer.

The elementary piece B2 can be supplied for insertion of the P Bag in a partially erect way, in which the elementary piece B2 is constructed until the operation (e) above. The parts of the tube 30 can be flattened for transport, for example by folding around the folding line CF21 or CF23 through 90 degrees to provide a substantially flat piece that is suitable for stacking. The erect package 100, including its contents (tobacco bag P) can be wrapped in a suitable outer wrap, for example cellophane, which can be removed by the consumer.

The elementary pieces B1 and B2 are illustrated in figs. 5 and 6a with a U-shaped recess in the front panel.

With reference to fig. 2, an alternative arrangement has been illustrated, in which the package comprises a section 18a that can be removed. Such packages can be formed from elementary pieces that have the same implantation as those illustrated in figs. 5 and 6a except that the elementary pieces include a section 18a that can be removed that occupies the vacuum corresponding to the U-shaped recess. Section 18a can be articulated along one of its edges to the container to allow access to the container without having to completely separate section 18a from the container.

The recess is illustrated as generally U-shaped. In particular, the recess left when section 18a is open is illustrated as a combination of two substantially U-shaped forms; a larger U shape depends on the open end A2 and a smaller U shape depends on the lower part of the larger U shape towards the closed end of the package. In figs. 7a and 7b the lid 4 is shown in a contrasting color with the container 2 for clarity.

In the example illustrated in fig. 7a, the cover 4 comprises two panels; a lid end panel (not visible in fig. 7a) covering the open end A2 of the container 2 and a front cover panel 22, which covers the entire front panel of the container. The closing panels CP1, CP2 and CP3 depend on the edges E1, E1 and E12 respectively of the front cover panel 22. The adjacent edges of the closing panels CP1 and CP2 and the adjacent edges of the closing panels CP2 and CP3 are joined together by means of the tabs T1 and T2 respectively (see Figs. 8a and 8b), which are fixed to the face inside the closing panel CP2 to form a flange comprising closing panels CP1, CP2, CP3 that overlap with the corresponding panels 12, 16 and 10 of the container when closed.
