Abstract
Aluminium to be used in the preparation of organo-aluminium compounds is activated by reaction with one or more halogens, halogen hydrides or organic substances containing labile halogen atoms, and the resulting aluminium halide separated from the aluminium. Chlorine and hydrochloric acid are the preferred reagents and when using these the aluminium trichloride formed can be easily volatilized: tetrachlorethane and tetrabromethane may also be used. The rate of the activation reaction may be controlled by diluting the activator with an inert gas such as nitrogen, argon, propane or butane, or by lowering the pressure at which the reaction <FORM:0901166/IV (b)/1> is conducted. The activation and conversion of the activated aluminium into say, alkyl aluminium compounds may be conducted in the apparatus shown. Aluminium shot is stored in a hopper 1, the lower part 2 of which is cylindrical and surrounded by a furnace 5. The part 2 is provided with an inlet 6 for an inert gas, an inlet 7 for the introduction of the halogen activator and an outlet 8 for removal of aluminium halide and gases formed. The activated aluminium passes via an air lock 4 into the reaction tower 3. At the bottom of the tower is a perforated plate 11 on which the charge lies, liquid products 12 falling through the plate and being drawn off. The organic substance which is to react with the activated aluminium enters at 14 and is pumped via 16 to a sprinkler 18. An inlet 19 allows for the introduction of a gas such as hydrogen.
