ESTADO DE LA TÉCNICA: La propulsión a motor en embarcaciones se ha ubicado siempre a la popa de estas. Solamente se utilizan motores de proa con finalidades de control de la embarcación, de manera transversal a la embarcación. La ubicación de la fuerza motriz en la popa provoca, ademas de la propulsión, un aumento del desplazamiento como efecto secundario. La embarcación se empopa y se hace necesario sistemas de equilibración (flaps o power trim). Este aumento del desplazamiento lo podemos considerar como una fuerza de resistencia . A partir de una velocidad (unos 5-7 nudos) hay una relación no lineal entre la potencia y la velocidad, de tal manera que hay que aumentar mucho la potencia para conseguir un poco mas de velocidad. Según el tipo de embarcación se consigue que a cierta velocidad esta planee, hay una reducción del desplazamiento, pero gracias a una elevada potencia.
