Dichas herramientas presentan la ventaja de ser fáciles de construcción y de permitir el fácil intercambio de recambios o discos de tratamiento superficial sin necesidad de cambio del plato. Cuando el disco presenta signos externos de deterioro gracias a la conexión mecánica por contacto el disco es simplemente arrancado de la superficie y sustituido por otro nuevo. También es posible con un mismo plato utilizar discos para diferentes operaciones (lijado, pulido ...). Los platos de tipo conocido que constituyen este tipo de herramientas exclusivamente presentan forma de platillo siendo la segunda cara plana, como consecuencia de la disposición laminar del disco. Sin embargo, presentan el problema para tratamiento de superficies irregulares (con radios de curvatura, etc.) de que el disco se desgasta de manera no uniforme y además se producen vibraciones debido al poco apoyo del disco sobre la superficie a tratar.
