Procedimiento de codificación de una imagen a codificar, que comprende las etapas: - definición de un mallado jerárquico que presenta al menos dos niveles de mallado encajados formados por mallas definidas por vértices; - determinación, para cada una de dichas mallas, de una información de error entre dicha imagen a codificar y una imagen interpolada obtenida a partir de los vértices de las mallas pertenecientes al nivel de mallado de la malla considerada; - detención (33) del afinamiento de las mallas que presentan una información de error inferior a un primer umbral predeterminado; caracterizado porque comprende igualmente las etapas siguientes: - aplicación de una codificación específica (35) para las mallas que presentan una información de error superior a un segundo umbral predeterminado; - continuación (34) del afinamiento de las mallas que presentan una información de error superior a dicho primer umbral predeterminado e inferior a dicho segundo umbral predeterminado.
