Abstract
Procedure for preparing the anti-viral compounds penciclovir and famciclovir.A procedure for the preparation of:i) penciclovir orii) famciclovir.including one or more of the following stages:a) forming a purine by closing the imidazole or pyrimidine ring,b) reacting a purine with an intermediate precursor with a suitable side-chain in position 9,c) converting the side chain in position 9 into:i) 4-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethylbut-1-yl orii) 4-acetoxy-3-acetoxymethylbut-1-yl,d) converting a purine into:i) guanine orii) 2-aminopurine;characterised by the side chain being as in the formula (I) compound:where Ra and Rb are hydroxy or a protected hydroxy which is converted into the desired side chain by the use of a mild reducing agent.<IMAGE>
