Abstract

Vaccine against vibriosis produced by Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 in eels, applicable to fish farms for the fattening of eels by an intensive system. The vaccine is a bacterium enriched with toxoids and made with capsulate strains selected for their toxicity. The vaccine was validated after it was found in the laboratory that animals vaccinated by the intraperitoneal route showed relative percentage survivals (RPS) higher than 90% with antibody titres quantified by means of ELISA of around 48,000. A vaccination procedure applicable to fish farms was then designed after simulation thereof in the laboratory eels of 6-8 grams were immunized by prolonged immersion and the vaccinated animals were infected by a bath method, an RPS of around 90% being obtained and bactericidal activity being detected in the mucus. The procedure was used on a large scale, it being demonstrated that the eels remained protected for more than six months after vaccination.
